KOZM | Video Shoot

I never thought I would be asked to shoot video. On top of that, I never thought I would be asked to shoot a music video. Javier of KOZM has seen a lot of my photography and asked if I would be willing to shoot a video for his group. He wanted a simple performance video. Me, not understanding what challenges come with video stated, “we can do so much more!”

Shooting a video outside has a wide range of challenges. The number one challenge, lighting. I feel that I discuss the challenges of lighting all the time, but when it comes to doing video, the challenges are more apparent.

KOZM stated that though the have shot videos before, they never felt that the videos captured the essence of their performance. That there was always something missing in the video, some feeling of energy in their performance. It was my job to try to capture that.

After The Fact

I shot the video at 60 frames per minute. After doing some research on video, I found that shooting at 24 frames per second is more visually appealing, as the eye is used to that frame rate for movies.

While I ensured that I had the cameras set up similarly, I forgot one small aspect until midway through the shoots. The first camera was on the vivid setting and the other was on flat. This became a more apparent problem when trying to do color adjustments in post.

Finally, lighting… When golden hour hit, the footage looked amazing. The other footage came out great as well, but the colors during golden hour were amazing. We have been working during the post-production to try to match all the scenes in color and tone.

Overall, I’m happy with the angels we shot at, the performance of the group, and the edits of the video. I only wish the colors worked a little better.
