Coming from Little Village to West Englewood has been an interesting experience for Karen and her family. As Little Village is becoming gentrified, the Guadarrama-Cortes family looks for a new community they can settle in. West Englewood has seen an increase in latino immigrants because of it’s low properly values and taxes. However Karen, as a grassroots community organizer, has a hard time accepting that moving to West Englewood also pushes out other lower-income black and brown residents. But it is one of the few Chicago neighborhoods her and her family can afford.

I met Karen through the ENLACE program. She has been an amazing resource for the cohort by bringing her experience and insight. She is brilliant and funny. She was one of the first that I bonded with in the program. I’m really excited to see where the cohort ends up in a year. I know Karen will be continuing to do amazing things for marginalized groups within Chicago.
