A Day in Springfield: Lobbying for Higher Education with NEIUPI

Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Springfield, IL, for the first time with Northeastern Illinois University’s union, University Professionals of Illinois (NEIUPI). We were there to advocate for equitable funding in higher education, supporting our administrators as they presented at an Appropriations Committee meeting.

This experience was more than just a trip—it was a deep dive into the inner workings of our state government. I got to see firsthand how lobbying works, from engaging with legislators to witnessing powerful speeches that highlight the urgent need for change. One of the most inspiring moments of the day was hearing Chris Merchant, a fellow advocate, deliver a passionate speech on why equitable funding is essential for our university and others like it across Illinois. His words resonated with everyone in the room, reinforcing the impact that collective action can have.

Beyond the formal meetings, the energy in the Capitol was electric. Seeing people come together to fight for education made me realize just how powerful grassroots advocacy can be. As a photographer, I’m always drawn to moments of passion and dedication, and this trip was filled with them—faculty, staff, and students standing side by side to ensure that our institutions receive the funding they deserve.

This experience has sparked a deeper curiosity in me about lobbying and legislative advocacy. There’s something incredibly motivating about being in the room where decisions are made, knowing that voices from our community are being heard. I’m excited to learn more about how we can continue to push for change and make a lasting impact.
