Illinois LAtino Center on Higher Education

From the ILACHE website: ILACHE joins with many other educational and social organizations across the country that have denounced the inhumane treatment of immigrant families and youth.  The precipitous deterioration of democratic culture, processes, and institutions is alarming. This disconcerting conservative wave is characterized by heightened imperial ambitions abroad, the diplomacy of arrogance in foreign affairs, and the demonization of immigrant workers and refugee seekers, many of whom are the victims of past and current policies of economic and political destabilization.

Being part of the Diversifying Faculty in Illinois fellowship, I was invited to attend the ILACHE conference at UIC. The conference was eye-opening with discussions on race and higher education. Conversations touched on different topics about current colonialism ideology embedded within higher education and legislation.

While there are several programs out there to help create more equity within education, there is still a lot of progress that needs to be made. Many of the speakers tried to tackle different aspects in which challenges are still prevalent.

There were several break out sessions at INLACHE, and I was able to attend three of them. The afternoon ended with scholarships being presented and awards.
