I can’t begin to tell you how much I learned from this experience. The women who lead this protest were fearless and strong, taking to the streets, not afraid to block traffic, and have public activities that helped continue the momentum of the march. At the end of the march, the ladies had a moment where anyone was able to speak their feelings about how they felt or what they learned. There was also group meditation and limpias (cleanings) available for all who participated.
I have to admit, I was a little scared and initially embarrassed. I wasn’t fully aware of the grandeur that was planned for the day. While walking in the streets I wasn’t sure how to feel. While I believed in their ideas, I was unsure of their methods. Yet, I understood why they were doing what they did. Voices are so often silenced, especially in underrepresented communities.
Where you spend your money matters. It’s something I’ve known, but being at a rally in which it is pointed out directly has made me truly realize the impact of money in underrepresented areas.
I don’t have many pictures from this event out of respect for the people in attendance. This event was eye-opening. While I am in school working on a masters of social work, I feel that this has been one of the greatest lessons I have learned in my life.
